York only just stared at the the leader board from the locker room. He was now ranked 3rd in the line. It didn't matter much to him, though, for Carolina, it seemed to crush her. Although she was ranked 2nd, it seemed like she was off the leader board. Even South was acting better than her. . . Maybe. At least she didn't lock herself in her room. York turned around and found the Director looking at the same board, hands calmly place behind his back. York turned around and stood straight.

"No need to. I'm just examining the board," The Director ordered. York lost his stance and turned back around. The Director walked closer and stood beside York. "Carolina isn't taken' the news too well. Isn't she?"

York shook his head, "I haven't seen her at all since the board changed. She's in her room. I would go see her but she locked it-"

"I'll give you the keys to the rooms. We only use them for emergencies but I guess this is a good reason."

"Thank you sir," York smiled. The director picked through his pocket before pulling out his keys and holding it on York's left side. "Very funny. . ." York frowned and took the keys, having a bit of trouble with trying to grab them with out turning his head. The Director smirked and walked out of the locker room, York looked at the Leader board once more before doing the same and walking down the hallway of rooms. Washington watched him pass and rushed up from behind.

"What do you have going on here?" Wash asked. York didn't turn but instead shrugged, "Trying to get through to Carolina."

"And you think walking into her room is going to help?" Wash chuckled. York glared at Wash before turning to one of the doors and placing his ear next to it. "I'm going to talk to her. Me and her are pretty close so-"

  "You mean like friends-with-benefits close?"

York growled, "You wish David. You know that is strictly prohibited."

Wash didn't reply. He only smirked and walked down the hall. York removed his ear and knocked softly on the door. He heard a sniff and some shuffling. "May I come in? It's York. . ."

She didn't reply. He took out a hair pin from his pocket instead of the key and picked the lock until it opened. He found Carolina laying on her bed, her hands covering her face.

  "I'm sorry to-"

  "Get out. . . "

  "Carolina-"

  "I said, Get out."

York shut the door, but walked over to her bunk and sat at the edge. She leaned up and removed her hands. She looked terrifying, but she looked like she was crying. "What do you want from me?" She asked, her voice a bit hoarse.

"I just came in to see if you are okay."

  "I'm fine. . ."

"You know that isn't true," York calmly said, moving on the bed to sit beside her, "and so do I. I just came in here to talk, but I won't force you to talk if you don't want to."

She didn't reply. He sighed and she sat up straight, moving her right hand to hold her shoulder and York saw a few tears roll from her eyes.

"York! I'm fine okay?! It's just Texas! The Director seems to like her the most and he is giving her the special treatment. Thanks to that, I lost my rank and got stuck in second. You know how that feels?! Of course you don't because no one understands,"

"I do 'Lina." York said, leaning closer and placing his hand around her shoulder.

"No you don't! I tried my best, and yet she is better. She is a fummmhp!" Carolina stopped and widened her eyes, only to notice a warm pair of lips pressed against hers.

York was a bit hesitant though. Worried because if he did pull away, she would slap him or refuse to speak with him. That worried feeling soon ceased when he felt her melt into the kiss, her shoulders relaxing and her closing her eyes. He finally pulled away and looked into her eyes.

"W-what ever that was for. . . Thank you," She sobbed, moving her hand off her arm and tugging York into a tight embrace. He moved the hair from her eyes and kissed her forehead. "Why though?" She asked, lifting her head off his shoulder and rested it against his.

"Because, I. . . Kind of like you."

"Yes. I know that, but do you-"

"And I mean-" He pulled away, grabbing her hands and running his thumb over her soft knuckles, "More than just a friend, any friend. All those missions we went through together, It showed me something."

"That you had feelings for me?"

"No. Actually that you were quite bad ass."

"Oh," Carolina blushed, turning her head, but York let go of one of her hands and moved it under her chin so he could look into those magnificent eyes.

"But it was that mission for the symbols, which were located on that sarcophagus-"

"The last mission we were on."

"Right. When after all that, and when you grabbed my hand and I had to pull you into the pelican. . . I don't know. I felt something different."

Carolina's cheeks flushed a deeper red and she closed her eyes, "You mean different than you normally do."

"It's just that damned left side. You know how it goes." York laughed.

"Besides the Leader board, I heard you were just rated for implantation."

"For the computer program thing? Yeah. . . Not too thrilled about it."

Carolina brushed the fringe out of her eyes and smiled at York, removing one of her hands from his grip and rubbing it against his cheek, "I'm sure it will be fine. You never know. Anybody else get the AI yet?"

"Not that I know of. It's not like I go into people's room and talk to them."

"Look what you are doing now."

York bit his bottom lip to save off a chuckle. He had to say something else, but he already felt awkward about being in another freelancers room, let alone a girl and kiss them, "When do you have training practice?"

"1535, so I better start heading there now." She calmly replied, getting up off the bed and walking over to the door, but stopped when she felt the warm presence of York's hand on her shoulder.

"One more thing though," York started, turning her around and looking into her eyes again.

  "What might that be?"

"Happy birthday beautiful," He said, kissing her one last time before walking her out the door, and walking the other direction.

He just hoped he didn't grab too much attention. The last thing he wanted was questions he didn't want to answer. . .
York/Carolina

Well, the title is from =British-Angel's theme challenge thing. ^^
Originally, this was just going to be a short story, nothing much. But talking with ~liriana, and I felt like writing more. ^^

The next part will be submitted on Shotgun's lap. Not here.

Also. Carolina and Wash are a tad OOC, but I'm trying to get the best I can. ^^;
